the only reason i didn't walk out was because my friend Alison drove a long way to come see me and for us to go see this movie (we were in the mood for something "girlie"). but this wasn't "girlie" - this was sh-t.
i saw this the other night with my very dear friend Jacqueline, aka Jacqui and/or Jax (but isn't the name Jacqueline really just SO pretty?). anyway, we hadn't seen each other in, like, forever (few months?) and although we constantly BlackBerry messenger sexually-harass each other, we were due for a date. and so, along with dinner, we decided to catch a flick as well (the last movie we saw together was The Other Boleyn Girl (2008), so it was absolutely time for another good friend flick). ANNNND, because this august i'm going to be one of Jacqueline's bridesmaids when she ties the knot (!!!!!), OF COURSE Bridesmaids was. the. movie.
before the film, i didn't know that much about who Bill Cunningham is - except for the fact that he's the photographer for TheNew York Times style section. and to see him nervous, slightly uncomfortable, almost bashful, as the subject behind a camera (whilst behind his own camera) is pretty great. for a fashion photographer, Cunningham isn't exactly, um, stylish - each day he wears the same blue smock (that same that street sweepers wear), and when it rains, he covers it with a cheap flimsy plastic poncho (that's prone to ripping) which he continuously mends with duct tape.
writing about Lars von Trier reminded me of my dear friend Luca. not because Luca scares me or leaves me feeling dirty or empty after an evening with him, or because he's creepy, or Danish, or a psycho, or says that he is sympathetic to Hitler. Luca's none of that. but what he IS (aside from being TALL) is another major cinephile who has probably seen just as many movies as i have - and not just the mainstream, but the really good, f-cked-up ones that few people have even heard about let alone have seen.
let's be honest, Danish director Lars von Trier is pretty f-cking f-cked up. i've seen all of his films, including his last, Antichrist (2009), which, um... was, shall we say, difficult to watch? the opening sceneis horrific, but also looks so, so beautiful. but then for like the last 40min, i watched Antichrist through my fingers. and then just shut my eyes completely and just listened. but then i had to f-cking peek. oh dear god, i peeked at the wrong time.
