dammit, why do you make it SO hard for me to like you?

let's be honest, Danish director Lars von Trier is pretty f-cking f-cked up. i've seen all of his films, including his last, Antichrist (2009), which, um... was, shall we say, difficult to watch? the opening scene is horrific, but also looks so, so beautiful. but then for like the last 40min, i watched Antichrist through my fingers. and then just shut my eyes completely and just listened. but then i had to f-cking peek. oh dear god, i peeked at the wrong time.

i still cant look at my grandfather's antique large tailor scissors without thinking about that film.

*shudder*

anyway, i've normally had to mentally prepare myself before stepping into the theatre to see one of Lars von Trier's films. they can be tough. they can kick you in the stomach. and then punch you in the face. but then kiss you passionately. and then leave you to die all bludgeoned on the sidewalk. and just when you think you're gonna die with a pleasant thought in your head, he comes back to disembowel you and sets fire to your guts.

yeah, for me, that's Lars von Trier. i gotta psych myself up to see his movies, much like i imagine a boxer does before stepping into the ring. his films (for me) cannot be a casual walk-in, or a pop-in dvd while in bed about to doze off.

but i've actually been very excited to see his latest film Melancholia that is due for release this november. the trailer looks beautiful, and i'm excited by the cast (Kristen Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg *LOVE her* Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård, John Hurt, and Charlotte Rampling).

but then the other day at the Cannes Film Festival, while promoting Melancholia at a press conference before the screening, von Trier had to go on and say some sh-t about sympathizing with Hitler. so, he's been BANNED. like, from ever coming back to Cannes. so, that's difficult for him, considering that his films are not really blockbuster types, and a film festival audience might be his main outlet and audience (this despite the fact that a few years ago at Cannes, a jury "awarded" him with a special "anti-award" for Antichrist being extremely misogynist. but, hey, at least it generated interest? (for what it's worth - while i found the film to be probably one of the most disturbing i've ever seen, i didn't find it misogynistic.)

*exhale*

so, i'm actually really disappointed, not because of what all his nazi sh-t talking does to him, but because of what it does to the Melancholia cast - their director had to go and take a steaming hot dump all over the movie (and unfortunately, ultimately them). i'm especially saddened for Kirsten Dunst. she had been out of the spotlight for a while now, and had been looking rough for quite a stretch. but then she went to rehab and it seems like she's been getting herself together. *fist pump* and i'm really rooting for her, because i really do like her very, very much. i've been hoping, waiting for her cool f-cking return.

what can i say...

man, why do you gotta be like that????!!!!!

here's the trailer for Malancholia. it really does LOOK quite beautiful.

and because i would never recommend to put yourself through watching Antichrist (unless you're a hardcore cinephile) i thought to at least give you the trailer. you won't need to cover your eyes, i promise.
